Have met Monil on 5-Aug for filing 2 tax returns (myself and wife's with an investment property) and below is my experience.

The Good:
1. There are 2 locations across West and North Adelaide so convenient for users from different parts in ADL.

2. The ease of booking. A simple phone call/sms and all booked in.

The Bad:
1. The pricing - We spoke on the phone for $80 per tax return and $70 for an investment property. Post filing return, I paid $330.
$90 per tax return + $70 investment property + $50 for asking a question + 10% GST = $330. I just paid without questioning.

2. The approach to Tax Filing - I believe we hire a tax agent for ease and convenience and to maximise the tax refund from ATO legally as they are the experts in this field. When my tax was filed, I went back home and checked the return and noticed that the methods ATO has published on their website, there is a fixed rate method that would have helped me get the maximum tax refund. Ideally, this should have been advised by the Tax Agent so I won't have to worry about it but that didn't happen in my case. So, I reported it back to Monil to correct it for both ITRs as this should have had happened in first place.

3. The Tax Refund - My tax refund came out okay but my wife's was only about 100ish dollars. After much effort, it was noticed that the Health Insurance details were not added to her return. Upon asking Monil, he mentioned they were not there in the ATO portal when my wife's return was filed so he skipped it. I expected this to have been clarified specially when my insurance details are in there but my wife's are not, I was carrying all those docs with me for a reason not to have missed this important detail that caused us so much headache.

4. The communication - The filing of return was okay, but with the issues we started facing from Step 2 above, I tried calling and messaging Monil to resolve the issues but things were not moving. Didn't get call backs (except for one occasion) and lack of communication made things really difficult. Only around mid September (more than 7 weeks later), when I got answered on one of the calls I made to Monil, he mentioned that he need to call ATO and they are very busy. So, I ended up calling the ATO myself and understood from them the issue on my wife's return and then amended it on my own and msg'd Monil about having spoken to ATO and amending the return. This should not have been my task to do but I did it anyway. And this poor communication is the reason that I have to put in so much effort in understanding all these issues and correcting them myself.

5. Overall - The day we received the refund in our bank account for my wife's amended return, I msg'ed Monil about it and also shared the poor experience we had. On this, he mentioned I need to pay him for the Amend - I see the first amend I requested would not have been needed if he had used the right method and not needing me to remind to use another method for the max refund and then the 2nd amend was done by myself after consulting with the ATO. So, I called him to understand and explain but the feedback wasn't taken constructively and he started blaming ATO, myself that I dont know about these things, etc and this ended in him disconnecting the call.

My view is that if you are charging for a service, you must own it end to end for your client. I understand there may be instances where something may not have gone well. In these cases, one should atleast listen to the feedback so they could improve the service next time onwards. I am not a person who would argue for 100 odd dollars and so I didn't even mention when paying for the original invoice of $330 that I was otherwise expecting to be around $230 (80 + 80 + 70) or $253 inc GST but when I am not getting the service I paid for and have to repeatedly follow-up without a response, this is definitely not a good look and will definitely make anyone upset.

I am surely looking for a different Tax Agent next time.

I just wanted to share my experience which is very bad, I have lodged my tax in August last year for 2023 it’s been 7 months and still waiting to get it done, they are very unprofessional people, very lazy, I was keep calling and sending emails and they don’t even know what to do or how to get sort it out, Very bad experience👎🏻
