I was first introduced to Alman Partners (AP) in 2012 when I was working in the coal industry. I had some extra income and I was keen to find a reputable financial planning company to invest my hard earned dollars, so I started asking some of the senior managers at the coal mine who they used (if anyone). Alman Partners was suggested by a number of long-term managers and employees so I decided to book an appointment to find out more.

I was particularly impressed when the meeting focused on what age I wanted to retire and what I wanted to have when I retired and how that would make me feel. Effectively they drew the link between my future aspirations, my emotions and feelings about life and things I wanted to have in life for me and my family. Once they found this out, they then worked back to provide advice on what I needed to do financially to get to that point. There were no 'get rich quick' options, just conservative advice and judgment and a mantra of 'time in the game, not timing the game'!!! (Thanks Paul!)

Recently my wife and I bought a house as we had just welcomed our first born into the world and it was time to have something more stable. Upon the review of our situation AP recommended that we sell down our portfolio as the gains from the last 5 years would help us meet one of our goals which was to have a family home.

I remember discussing with Paul Shepard that I had reservations about selling down the portfolio as it was performing very well and that I wasn't confident in buying a house, as house prices were quite high. Paul put some perspective into our conversation by reminding me that one of my goals (developed at the first meeting in 2012) was to have a family home. Immediately the pressure was off and I knew the right decision was to realize this goal despite the uncertainty in my mind. I will never forget that advice from Paul and it is clear that he and AP had my interests first and foremost at mind. I don't believe that there would be many other financial planners out there that would do this too. For these actions I will always invest with AP when I decide to return to the investment arena.

AP make things easy and they handle as much of the paperwork as they can (apart for signatures etc!). I would recommend them to anyone and in fact I have recommended them to all family and friends that talk to me about investing.

Friendly, enthusiastic, optimistic team. Family type of environment. Was a customer for around 7 years. Investments made through their company made a decent return, commission brought it back down to a modest return. Due to personal circumstances I decided to sell all investments to concentrate on paying off my residential home loan. Unfortunately Alman Partners didn't follow my instructions on sale of assets and I ended up paying a large amount of capital gains tax in one financial year and retained a comparable capital loss in the next financial year. While I haven't lost the potential tax offset I cannot use it in the near future and instead of being debt free (which I would have been by now) I will have to continue paying off my loan and paying more interest. Looking back, I would have been in a better position now if I'd avoided the investments and paid off my home loan first. The money I would have saved on home loan interest with the same amount of effort put in would have been about the same as the amount earned from their investment strategy after overall costs and tax benefits. This is my personal experience and everybody's circumstances will be different. Instead of just looking at dollar signs critically analyze the performance of the investment as a whole.
