Exceedingly disappointed.
I found Djirra when looking for legal support services for a male indigenous man who is, and has been a victim of family violence for many years.
Djirra's website, unlike many others specifically stated they work with "Aboriginal people", not "women and children". After providing all of his information this gentleman then had to follow up multiple times to hear back, at which time he was advised that he 'wasn't eligible at this time'. When he asked why he wasn't eligible he was informed that 'as a male they aren't able to offer additional services as they primarily cater to women, so we can't offer the legal services either'.
This gentleman has received a similar response from every single place that he had reached out to, and I was so optimistic that Djirra would look beyond his gender and see that regardless he requires the same support and assistance as anyone else. Because of his gender he is already struggling to find this assistance anywhere else and has now been left with nowhere else to turn.
It's exceptionally disappointing how this indigenous man is discriminated against because of his gender, no wonder the statistics around males being perpetrators of family violence are so skewed, most men cannot report, or receive support, in relation to the family violence to which they are subjected.
And if they did happen to disclose their situation to anyone else they would likely be told 'not to bother' reporting it as so little support exists for them.

Unfortunately no Disabled — or for Clients with young kids — undercover parking. There are only 3-4 Parks and they are all for Staff. If Djirra stays in this location, there is little that can be done to rectify this situation.
The pluses though, are the kindness and generosity of the Staff, the smooth quality/flavour of the fine green tea, the fairly recent inside renovation, and the best "Identify as Female," toilet in the whole of Melbourne, perhaps the State!
A great Team of Lawyers and support Staff from Reception through to Djirra's Social Workers & Advocates. Impressive also, as an Organisation visibly working to improve itself — community standing and overall outcomes for Clients/Community.

Djirra is an Aboriginal women's legal service but it so so much more than that
They've helped me work out that I deserve much more and to be treated better than the way my husband and kids treated me, I say used to as I'm about to start divorce proceedings and I've wiped my kids - you would think that your own would not lie, cheat or steal from you, but you wouldn't always be right for thinking that
No one has the right to abuse you in any way - physically, emotionally, financially, verbally, no one.
Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and Djirra helped me realise that I definitely deserve better

Djirra is an aboriginal womens legal service assisting mainly with domestic violence support and services. Indigenous women can access toiletries, clothing and variety of fantastic inclusive hands on workshops and sessions including cooking, art, craft and community consultations. I attended a Mabu Mabu pavlova workshop yesterday with Nornie from Mabu Mabu - the wattleseed chocolate pavlova was to die for.
