My initial lawyer at Focus Family Law they sacked, and the principle took over my case. I found the principle cold and uncaring while failing (and often refusing) to provide guidance despite charging for every second of her time. Being already entrenched with them for my financial settlement I did not go elsewhere, which I now regret. My financial settlement was a disaster, being at the absolute worst-case maximum and I later found out they had failed to consider my capital gains in the property settlement. Overcharging was a concern, for example they charged me $18,500 for the last 2 weeks of work which included 20% extra for “Care & Consideration” (yes check your contract) despite it being the same work as previous.

I generally try to avoid leaving bad reviews but at this point I feel I have an obligation to share my experience with Focus Family Law.

I engaged FFL to assist with a family law matter, and at the start, they were great. I gave them frank and full disclosure of the matter and they outlined costs of $5000 to lodge an application for proceedings, with the preliminary requirements already being completed by myself. Throughout the process, including the lodgement date, I requested updates on costs and enquired about transferring more for the retainer, being aware that ethically, solicitors stop acting once the retainer is exhausted. I was assured that we hadn't or barely exceeded the intial $5000, despite there being complications from the other party during the process.

The lodged affidavit was rushed, contained incorrect information despite my providing clarifications, and even managed to contain other client's information in the evidence brief.

I then received an invoice for $16,423.53. When I asked for clarity regarding the charges, I was told that was the correct amount and there was a significant amount that hadn't been added to the invoice that would be added if I did not pay that same day. At this point I notified FFL that I would be seeking a costs assessment, a legal right, and I was issued a report from FFL that outlined costs that reached $44,842, plus interest, that appears to be charged at 6% compounding daily as per their costs agreement and told that the matter would be referred to debt collectors, further increasing the costs. Of particular humour is the inclusion of $590 in charges prior to my intial appointment, and $3270 to discuss the original invoice and submit a time report.

I've since engaged another solictor who has taken a different avenue to FFL and acts far more efficiently.

In the time I needed advise and help, Focus Family Law was the wrong choice. The laywer that was assigned to my case was hopeless. She made many mistakes with figures and just was going in circles and 25k later I got nowhere. Then she left the firm and I was almost forgetton about. I contacted the director and told her about how I felt. She didn't seem to care that I was way over charged. I found a new solicitor who charged just over 5k which he did way more work and got me results. If you want to waste money and to be made to feel impersonal pick Focus Family Law.
