I just had a phone appointment to do the free Second Look Assessment that H&R Block offers on their website. It was a confusing mess that doesn’t give me any confidence in this office.

The tax agent from the Phillip office called me and said she had set up a portal where I could upload by deductions, even though that wasn’t the purpose of my appointment and I’d made that clear when I booked.

After several minutes of me clarifying, she then got the details up of my last tax return, and just read out to me exactly what I had put in the return myself without any sort of analysis or commentary. I already know what I put in my own tax return.

She then asked if I wanted to make an amendment. The whole point of the appointment was for H&R Block to provide their expert advice on whether I should make an amendment if I missed anything. Despite me trying to clarify, I didn’t get anywhere sort of advice.

Given I wasn’t getting anywhere, I asked if I could just have the $25 off my next paid service (as per online) if they couldn’t find any reason to amend. This was also something they’d never heard of, and weren’t able to give me any sort of $25 voucher.

Really poor experience - was planning on getting these guys to do my 2023-24 return, but will just do it myself for free if they can’t offer any expert advice.

I’ve had mixed experiences with H&R Philip after using their service for my business taxes over the past 3 financial years. The 1st year went smoothly, but during the 2nd and 3rd years, they failed to lodge my TPAR on time. It was left unattended, and their explanation was that the person handling my tax had resigned. The following year, I made sure to double-check that they would lodge it on time, but once again, they forgot. This time, the reason given was that the person responsible for my taxes was away for personal reasons.

I’m very disappointed. This level of unprofessionalism has wasted a lot of my time. On a positive note, one of their staff members, Zula, was incredibly helpful when I contacted them about the TPAR issue.

I’m willing to give them another chance next financial year, with Zula’s assistance, and I hope things go smoothly—assuming she’s still with the company.
