We drove up Jacob’s Ladder in Ben Lomond National Park, and wow… it’s basically a scenic rollercoaster with a side of panic. This road is steep, twisty, and full of hairpin bends that make you question your life choices and your car insurance all at once. One moment you’re admiring the alpine views, the next you’re gripping the wheel, silently begging your brakes to cooperate.

The scenery is unreal — snowy peaks in the distance, valleys stretching forever, and those moments when the road disappears around a bend and you think, “Yep, that’s a sheer drop. Cool.” The wind in the windows is fresh and exhilarating, but also helps you breathe through the mild terror.

Worth all the hype, the ride was not fantastic because of the low speed limit, but the view is breathtaking. No coffee to be found at the village unfortunately 😕

The road was in very good condition in November. Be aware this road will be treacherous with snow chains and 4wd only in the winter months. In the summer months it's accessible with 2wd cars. Truly amazing drive and worth the effort to make it to the top.

Unfortunately I came across huge fog up the top so didn't see the expected scenery. I drove a rental 2wd and managed to go all the way up and down, however I did experience some sort of traction lost in the second last turn (as shown). That turn is particularly steep, with holes of different sizes right at the turning corner. As the other reviewer said this ascend/descend (with a 2wd) is for experienced drivers only, as you can't go overly fast -- nor can you go too slow which may lead to a forced stop in the middle of an uphill road. I would be keen to take my ute here one day but I probably wouldn't want to attempt this again with a 2wd.
PS. I went on a dry day despite the fog. On a wet day, do not attempt with a 2wd.
