Nothing but drama with this organisation.

It seems unless you have a multi million dollar portfolio, you are stuck with second rate service and horrible communication.

I was with a smaller Independent accountant, and reasonably satisfied with the service i was receiving.

To my great misfortune that accountant merged with MGI and have had nothing but problems since.

1st year, had to chase for months to get tax return completed

2nd year, received all documents as well an invoice for completion of tax return. Slight problem as the tax returns were never actually lodged (found this out after we were notified of cancellation child care subsidies)

3rd year, yet again chasing to get tax returns done and nothing but mistakes and miscommunication.
Final kicker is being advised of a $3k tax bill. Sure, fair enough, death and taxes and all, happy to get that paid.

What was failed to be mentioned was that there would actually be a $3k each for both myself and my wife.

As far as this firm is concerned, I would recommend skipping the fine print with this organisation and just skip working with this firm all together.

*Don't look here if you are wanting good quality small business accounting*.

We are a commercial tenant where the tenancy negotiations were managed by MGI Joyce Dickson on behalf of the Self Managed Super Fund that owns our building. We went through the process of attempting to negotiate a renewal and the appraisals provided weren't really aligned with the current market. Long story short, we ended up securing an alternative property at a much better price. Lorin was very slow to respond to communications (usually taking more than a week to respond to emails) and often required follow ups before getting a response. On the flip side the people working in accounts (Katrina) has always been lovely to deal with and very responsive.

Its always disappointing to give a less than positive review.

This firm charges highly but I'm not confident they weren't putting their interests ahead of ours. We decided to not take their advice on some compliance issues about our trust deed and were very pleased we chose not to based on subsequent compliance advice. The firm was very rude to one of us when we questioned what we were being charged for and why the need for the proposed change. The motives were murky to me, even after we had taken the trouble to have a senior partner give us an explanation of just why this was required.

We persisted for a few years but found we could not get the service we were looking for. It sometimes took what I felt was a long time to get our SMSF return lodged and follow up calls were sometimes required. We gave up on the firm's information seminars because of inconsistency eg. one year we were told that in specie transfer such as shares couldn't be made to our fund and the next year it was okay to do it. What's that do for confidence?

I felt that every piece of information I could benefit from only came if I paid a bit more. I expect that approach from a corner store and not from my professional adviser if I don't know what I don't know but to be fair this can often be a problem with Canberra advisers who self style themselves as experts. We had a warning letter from the ATO about late lodgement but this wasn't a problem when we took over active management of lodgement.

We also received an excess transfer balance determination for our superannuation that was not required because they kept lodging transfer balance information using a different account number each time (up to 5 times in one of our cases!) that just kept duplicating the amount. I found this just a basic lack of competence. This was an error that cost us more money with our new advisers to fix this on top of the additional fees over our SMSF administration fees we paid to do the original lodgements.

In the end we voted with our feet and went elsewhere, immediately finding out about something from our new advisers that we could have been doing all along which saved us several thousand in expenses. It was just another annoying factor.
